Few people would describe the music of pop star Taylor Swift as punk rock. But Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder saw a big similarity between Swifties and punk audiences.
Vedder took his daughter to a Swift concert, and the Pearl Jam singer was impressed by the communal feel surrounding the show. “The run-up to it, making friendship bracelets with her and the generosity of these young girls and boys, trading these bracelets with different messages on them – lyrics, song titles, just acts of goodwill on these little bracelets,” Vedder told Mojo. “They had found their tribe; they were all agreeing on something.”
He continued: “The craziest thing was it reminded me of punk rock crowds, of being aligned with all of the misfits in a our town, back in the day. It was galvanizing and powerful.”
Pearl Jam is set to release a new studio album, “Dark Matter,” on April 19. “No hyperbole, I think this is our best work,” Vedder said.
