KISS frontman Paul Stanley was among those who weighed in on the Oscars slap given to comedian Chris Rock by actor Will Smith. Rock made a “G.I. Jane” joke referring to Smith’s wife, Jada Pinckett Smith, and her lack of hair. She suffers from the medical condition alopecia, but Rock reportedly was unaware when he made the comment. Later in the show, Smith accepted the award for Best Actor, an honor he may have to return after violating The Academy’s code of conduct. The Academy tweeted: “The Academy does not condone violence of any form.”

“Wait… Chris Rock makes a bad joke about Jada Pinkett’s appearance,” Stanley tweeted. “Will Smith walks onstage hits him in the face shouts out obscenities & later in tears accepts an Oscar saying “Love makes you do crazy things” to a STANDING OVATION?!? WTF Hollywood. That’s not WOKE. That’s WEAK.” Stanley again tweeted about the incident later saying: “What personal issues would embolden someone enough to walk onstage and ASSAULT another person? THEN how could an audience of people who believe themselves morally and socially conscious watch & spend the rest of the night cheering him? Sad and scary.”

Other rockers have expressed their opinions on the situation. Twisted Sister guitarist Jay Jay French tweeted: “No one should ever hit another person like @willsmith did to @chrisrock. Among many issues this created at the #AcademyAwards2022 I think it’s time for comedians to stop making fun of peoples (especially woman) appearance it is degrading and unnecessary”. Fear Factory guitarist Dino Cazares has defended Rock on Twitter. “No one made fun of her medical condition cause he didn’t know she had one,” Cazares wrote. “He’s a comedian that’s what he was hired to do roast the actors.”

Testament guitarist Alex Skolnick tweeted: “I missed #Oscars2022 & a whole lot apparently. Quick thought: Wasn’t he the ‘nice’ rapper? Meanwhile ‘scary’ rappers have great senses of humor, ie IceT & Snoop (his IG is LOL FUNNY). C’mon #WillSmith. You don’t have to like #ChrisRock’s joke but an ugly meltdown? Violence? Wtf? … WillSmith’s overreaction at the #Oscars stole the spotlight from @questlove, #SummerOfSoul & even #KingRichard (for which he won!) There are better ways to express displeasure. Just when it finally gets past #OscarsSoWhite, he turns it into #OscarsYoFight #willsmithchrisrock” Rock was scheduled to make his first public appearance since the clap on Wednesday at Boston’s Wilbur Theater.
