During a recent Instagram Q&A session, Pat McAfee shared an update on his WWE future, admitting that while he won’t say “never,” a comeback doesn’t feel imminent, noting that the wrestling landscape has passed him by. Having stepped away from his SmackDown commentary role in mid-2025 due to burnout from an intense schedule, McAfee made a one-off appearance at Wrestlepalooza in Indianapolis but has been absent since, prioritizing family and ESPN commitments.
“I don’t think you ever say never, especially with WWE. But right now it does not feel like it is something is supposed to happen. Feels like that business has kind of passed me by a little bit. I grew up loving it, dreamed to work in it. Feel honored that I had the opportunity to work alongside the GOAT, Michael Cole. I feel like the biz is in a good spot without me. I’ll continue to watch.” – Pat McAfee
38-year-old McAfee went from an NFL punter to a WWE personality in 2020, first debuting as an in-ring performer in NXT, feuding with Adam Cole. Next, he would join SmackDown commentary in 2021 alongside Michael Cole and go on to have his wrestling career highlight Austin Theory and then Vince McMahon at WrestleMania 38. Additionally, he would wrestle Happy Corbin and the Miz, and compete in the 2024 Royal Rumble match, with his possible final ever match being against Gunther.
