Despite WWE’s best attempts to keep it under wraps, news of Jeff Cobb’s upcoming debut at Backlash broke prior to the show. Still, fans were wowed when he attacked LA Knight, allowing Jacob Fatu to hit a moonsault and secure the victory. And now, after Big E stated that the former New Japan star was “once referred to as Jeff Cobb,” it appears WWE management has decided to change his ring name, with it having been spotted that the company has applied to trademark “JC Mateo.”
42-year-old Cobb started out as an amateur wrestler and even represented Guam at the 2004 Summer Olympics, finishing 21st out of 22 competitors in his weight class. However, with not much money in amateur sports, he would instead pursue a career in pro wrestling, making his name in Lucha Underground, ROH, and New Japan, where he clearly grabbed WWE’s attention in the process.
