Vocalists Heidi Sheppard and Carla Harvey formed heavy metal act the Butcher Babies in 2010. Heavily influenced by Wendy O. Williams of the Plasmatics and numerous metal acts including Slipknot, Slayer and more, the group is known for pushing the envelope and their fearless approach.

Recently, the band made an interesting cover song choice in Saweetie and Doja Cat’s “Best Friend.”

“It was difficult to figure out how to approach covering this song,” guitarist Henry Flury said as reported by Metal Sucks. “So I told Heidi to get on the mic and just go for it. When I heard how ferocious it was, the riff just came to me. We had the song done in about 10 minutes.”

Heidi Sheppard said she was excited to bring the tune into the metal realm.

“During the last 15 as Butcher Babies, we have proved that a strong friendship can and will withstand all,” she said. “When I first heard this song by Saweetie & Doja Cat, I knew that we needed to be the ones to bring this into the metal world. With our un-breakable bond, Carla and I just grow stronger each time we play this to a live audience. It’s a true anthem of female power, screaming, ‘we are stronger together.’ I am truly honored to scream this song along my best friend.”

Carla Harvey added that the song was great because “in a world wherein women are often pitted against each other, we instead chose to celebrate each other and grow together.”

Earlier this year Harvey spoke to the Talk Toomey podcast about how she used to work as a mortician. She recounted some weird times during her work with the dead, and she talked about how she used to imagine people she was close to had passed in order to accept that they would no longer be a part of her life. “That was a coping mechanism that I actually started when my dad abandoned us,” she said. “I just pretended that he was dead… It was a way to protect myself.
