Metallica played a pair of sold-out shows over the weekend celebrating their 40th anniversary at the Chase Center in San Francisco. For Friday night’s show, Metallica performed tunes from every album in chronological order from oldest to latest. For Sunday night’s show, the band reversed it from latest to oldest, but both nights featured some surprises.
On Friday, the band played “Fixxxer”, taken from 1997’s “Reload,” for the first time. Friday’s setlist also included some lesser-played live material including “Trapped Under Ice” (from 1984’s “Ride the Lightning”), “The Shortest Straw” (from 1988’s “…And Justice for All”) and “Frantic” (from 2003’s “St. Anger”). “We are grateful that you have been along with us for 40 years, and we are so happy that you’re here still after all this time,” frontman James Hetfield said during the first show. “It still blows my mind. Because we were created to do this. I know it.”
The second of the anniversary shows featured even deeper cuts including “Dirty Window” (from 2003’s “St. Anger”), “Bleeding Me” and “Wasting My Hate (both from 1996’s “Load”), and “Harvester of Sorrow” (from 1988’s “…And Justice for All”). On Thursday, the city of San Francisco declared Dec. 16 “Metallica Day” in the city, and the two shows were part of Metallica’s “San Francisco Takeover,” a four-day citywide celebration of the band that included a film festival, photo exhibit and smaller venue shows featuring other acts.
Since forming in 1981, Metallica has sold around 120 million albums worldwide, garnered nine Grammy Awards and earned a spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
