Rapper/rocker Machine Gun Kelly has been plenty busy in recent weeks promoting his new album, “Mainstream Sellout.” He recently appeared on “The Howard Stern Show” and performed a cover of the System Of A Down song, “Aerials” and received some criticism for his version on social media but not from the band. System Of A Down guitarist Daron Malakian said of the cover: “I don’t know much about @machinegunkelly, it’s always an honor when someone covers your song, so I can’t hate the guy for giving it a shot.”

Recently, MGK released a collaboration with Bring Me the Horizon called “Maybe,” which leans more toward MGK’s recent pop-punk material than it does the heavier sounds of BMTH. Some listeners, however, noticed that the song leans a lot towards Paramore’s song, “Misery Business.” Despite accusations of plagiarism, “Maybe” is credited as an interpolation of the Paramore tune, which suggests the derivative was likely planned in advance. Interpolating is when an artist recreates the original melody of another song rather than sample the original recording. MGK and Travis Barker actually covered “Misery Business” in the past, so it’s not all that surprising that parts of it surfaced in the MGK/BMTH collaboration. MGK was also accused of stealing hooks from Metro Station’s “Shake It” for his song, “Acting Like That,” but Metro Station said they were pleased the song shared similarities.

Earlier this week MGK went undercover for the latest episode of “Jimmy Kimmel Live” and interviewed the public to hear what they think of him. “Uhhh, I’m not a huge fan, I think his new direction’s a little forced,” said one interview subject. Dressed in a wig and with extensive makeup covering his tattoos, MGK joked, “I feel like this is what the profile picture of all the people that hate me look like.”
