Modern metal stalwarts Linkin Park seemingly came to an end with the passing of singer Chester Bennington in 2017.

However, earlier this year, the band put out an unreleased song, “Lost,” as part of plans for the 20th anniversary edition of their seminal album, “Meteora,” which was released Friday. The new edition contains six previously unreleased songs in all.

In a new interview with Z93 radio, Linkin Park bassist Dave “Phoenix” Farrell was asked if he thinks Linkin Park will ever write and record new music. Optimistically for Linkin Park fans, the bassist hinted at doing something again under the Linkin Park banner in the future.

“The best answer I can give is I think that we will do something again at some point,” the bassist said. “I think we’ll do, hopefully, new music. And I would love to play some shows.”

Though new music is not off the table, Farrell isn’t sure when it will happen.

“The reality of it is that the timetable, I have no idea what that is or what that looks like. And we’re not trying or haven’t made any progress toward doing it.”

“The relationship in the band is still intact between all the guys and we’re still in communication, but everybody is always in different kind of spaces. And the amount of earth that needs to be moved to begin the construction project of Linkin Park and whatever that may look like is a ton, and it’s not going anywhere fast.”

“And so it’s just kind of a ‘wait and see,'” Farrell added. “I know that’s not the answer that anybody wants ’cause it’s not really any information. But at the same time, I think it’s just kind of honestly where it’s at.”

Mike Shinoda talked about the previously unreleased material on the 20th anniversary edition of “Meteora” earlier this year . He said of the track, “Lost”: “Finding this track was like finding a favorite photo you had forgotten you’d taken, like it was waiting for the right moment to reveal itself.”

“For years, fans have been asking us to release something with Chester’s voice, and I’m thrilled we’ve been able to make that happen in such a special way. I think they’re going to be floored when they hear and see all the incredible unreleased songs and video footage in METEORA|20.”

Bennington committed suicide at the age of 41, but his presence is still widely felt within the metal community. He had been candid about his mental health struggles throughout his career.
