Lex Luger, real name Lawrence Pfohl, was one of the biggest pro wrestling stars of the 90s. However, he was forced to retire in 2007 after turning his neck in an unusual way during a flight and suffering swelling from his C6 vertebra, at the base of his neck, down to his chest. This resulted in him having no movement in either his arms or legs. Thankfully, things have improved since then for the former WCW Champion, and now, during an interview with Under The Ring, he has shared more information on his current condition, going as far as to call it “a blessing in disguise.“
“I was never supposed to be partially paralyzed, I’m what they call a ‘high-functioning quadriplegic.’ I can live independently and feed and bathe myself. I wasn’t supposed to be able to do any of that. It’s really a miracle of god that I can do what I do.
I kinda look at the big picture, I feel like I was kinda streamlined and redefined. I was always about the physical Lex, and I was kinda one-dimensional. I was all about the physical. A little bit about the mental, which gave me worldly success, but I was spiritually dead. The spinal cord injury turned out to be a blessing in disguise.”
65-year-old Luger broke into the business via Championship Wrestling From Florida in 1985, and by 1987, he was with Jim Crockett Promotions, becoming a member of the Four Horsemen. During this period, he would have plenty of success, although he somewhat surprisingly departed the company to join Vince McMahon’s World Bodybuilding Federation.
Still, due to a motorcycle accident, this didn’t work out, and when the WBF went out of business, he began wrestling for WWE as The Narcissist and later with an all-American gimmick. Ultimately, though, his WWE run didn’t live up to expectations, and he would go on to return to WCW without telling McMahon ahead of time, re-debuting during the premiere of Nitro.
