Heavy metal legends and Rock & Roll Hall Of Famers Metallica are arguably the biggest band of all time in their genre, and they’re also huge supporters and fans of their current and past peers. In a recent interview with Zane Lowe at the SXSW Festival, Ulrich talked about his music roots and also revealed who he considers to be Metallica’s biggest fan: himself.

“I have a very clear sort of visual with this thing about this door being open,” he said. “It’s just about trying to be as accessible as possible, as transparent as possible. You know, when I would go see bands like Iron Maiden and Motörhead, I would end up backstage, hanging out with the bands, or meeting them outside the venues, spending time with them, or getting autographs. My friends and I used to follow Motörhead around California, drive behind their tour bus… That’s always been in me.”

Ulrich continued: “I cannot, will not — and certainly, 45 years into it, can say with certainty — I will never shake the fanboy that I really am. I consider myself to be the biggest Metallica fan there is. I say that with pride, and I’ll always do everything I can to take the fan’s side, and to try to make sure that whatever access is possible. We are on all the streaming platforms, we don’t just side with one or the other, because that’s not fair to the fans.”
