KISS are easily one of the most identifiable bands and brands in rock and music history. The group’s iconic make-up made them larger-than-life characters akin to something out of a comic book.
However, in a new interview with 94.3 The Shark, original KISS guitarist Ace Frehley said that the owner of KISS’ record label wasn’t so sure the look would fly.
“I’ll never forget the day we were in a photo session shooting the album cover,” Frehley recalled. “I got a phone call from Neil Bogart. I mean, this is the day we’re shooting the album cover. He goes, ‘You sure you want to wear the make-up?’ He wasn’t sure the make-up was going to be a hit.”
“And we stuck to our guns and just said, ‘Take it or leave it. This is us.’ And he took it. And the rest is ‘Kisstory,’ what can I tell ya? I think we had something special once we pretty much decided what make-up we were going to wear and the costumes and stuff.”
Frehley has been busy promoting his latest solo record, “10,000 Volts.” His full interview with 94.3 can be heard below.
