Kevin Owens Reveals What He Would Change About His Universal Championship Reign

Often in wrestling, it’s about being in the right place at the right time and taking advantage of openings that present themselves to you, even if it, unfortunately, comes at the expense of someone else. An example of this was Kevin Owens’ Universal Championship reign which came about because Finn Bálor had to vacate the title due to injuring his shoulder during the match he won the title.

As champion, Owens found himself as a significant part of Raw, and the legendary “Festival of Friendship” segment with Chris Jericho looked set to propel the duo to the main event of WrestleMania 33. However, plans changed, and instead, Owens was beaten by Goldberg in 22 seconds after a distraction by Jericho, and his run as champion ended at 188 days.

Now, in an interview with TalkSport, Owens has opened up about his time as Universal Champion, revealing that he doesn’t care that his reign ended in a squash. Although he does regret that he didn’t take the time to enjoy his run as champion, and he’d love to take the title from Reigns to make things right for himself.

I don’t really care how it ended, It ended the way it ended, and they all have to end at some point. At least it ended for a reason. There was a reason for it ending beyond “hey, Owens isn’t doing a good job,” because that wasn’t the case. Whether it should have ended that way or not is another discussion altogether.

What I mean the most when I talk about I’d love to have another Universal title run to make things right is for myself. My mindset has changed a lot since I was champion, and back then, I didn’t take the time to enjoy any of it. I was just too focused on trying to make it good, make it better, make it as good as it can be, and I really, really didn’t enjoy it the way I should have, my wife was instrumental in making me realize that. My parents as well, even guys like Shawn Michaels, Triple H, and even Vince McMahon himself, they’ve all told me that it seemed like I forgot to enjoy this part of things, and if you’re not going to enjoy being the champion, then what are you going to enjoy in this industry?

I’d love to be able to get back there just so I can enjoy it properly, but we’ll see. All I can do is do my best to stay in that story, and hopefully, I get to take it from Roman or somebody else in the future. Kevin Owens

Right now, Cesaro is the man feuding with Reigns for the Universal Championship, and given that Owens recently worked a program with Reigns, it seems unlikely he’ll be challenging for the title again soon. Although, as his previous world title run shows, an injury or a change of plans can result in a title switch, and it sounds Owens is ready to grab that opportunity if it arises.
