Journey Drummer Discusses Insane Amount Of Drugs That He Did

Journey drummer Deen Castronovo is an immensely talented musician and singer. The 58-year-old is a veteran of many notable bands including Bad English and Hardline, and he’s been a touring drummer for Ozzy Osbourne, Steve Vai and Paul Rodgers, among others.

He’s also currently involved in numerous projects as drummer and singer including Revolution Saints and Generation Radio, and he frequently is a guest vocalist and musician for a variety of melodic rock and rock projects.

In 2015 however, Castronovo got heavily involved in drugs and was arrested on domestic violence charges. He ended up losing his job in Journey and spent 15 days in jail. He has since cleaned up, and he even got his job back in Journey.

“I don’t take anything for granted now,” he told the “On The Road To Rock” show. “I mean, honestly, bro, and I’m not blowing this up or hyping it, I should be dead. The amount of drugs that I was using would have killed a rhino.”

“I mean, I was in deep,” Castronovo said of what he previously revealed to be a 24-day meth binge. “And I’m just grateful to be alive. I give all glory to Jesus Christ. If it wasn’t for Christ pulling me out of that, I’d be dead. So for me, yeah, every day is, like… I go around with my drum tech, every once in a while, at these [Journey] shows, and I’m, like, ‘Dude, I’m back in the band. Isn’t this amazing?’ We pinch ourselves. I used to do that before, but now, dude… I’m grateful to have my wife back, my kids and my grandkids. And to be able to do what I love and make a living doing it, man, there’s nothing better. Nothing better.”

Castronovo previously talked about being fired from Journey with the Statesman Journal.

“They had to,” Castronovo said. “They have an impeccable legacy, and I tarnished that. They didn’t fire me to punish me. They fired me because they love me and they wanted me to get help. They knew I couldn’t do it and be on the road.”

Revolution Saints’ new album, “Eagle Flight,” is set to be released April 21. It’s the first record with the band’s new lineup, which in addition to Castronovo on drums and vocals features bassist Jeff Pilson and guitarist Joel Hoekstra.
