John Cena Sr. Opposes Gunther Being His Son’s Final Opponent

Ahead of the final of John Cena’s “Last Time is Now” tournament between Gunther and LA Knight, the retiring star’s father has voiced his opposition to the Austrian being his son’s potential final opponent. John Cena Sr. voiced this opinion during an interview with the All Axxess Podcast, deeming it unwise and unappealing to fans, as Gunther requires no additional “rub,” and noted that his son had already passed the torch to Cody Rhodes.

“I don’t think that’s a wise move. I don’t think the fans would enjoy that move. Gunther does not need the rub.

And by the way, I’m not a fan of the whole ‘on the way out you’ve got to push somebody over the top’ idea. You’re supposed to pass the torch, but I don’t know if that’s written anywhere in professional wrestling.. If we have to use that as an analogy, then he’s already done that with Cody Rhodes. He beat him for the title. He gave the title back. They embraced, Cody was teary-eyed. The torch was passed.”John Cena Sr.

Gunther, born in 1987 trained under Michael Kovac and others, making his wrestling debut in 2005. From there he dominated independents, winning three wXw Unified World Championships, the PWG World Championship, and Progress titles. Subsequently, he signed with WWE in 2018, and Walter held the NXT UK Championship for a record 870 days. Renamed Gunther in 2022, he set the longest Intercontinental Championship reign at 666 days and has since won the  World Heavyweight Championship twice.
