Sabu tragically passed away on May 11, which was just weeks after he wrestled his retirement match at GCW’s Joey Janela’s Spring Break 9 event. Yet while there is no evidence that the no rope barbed wire bout had any connection with Sabu’s passing, some fans would take to social media to accuse GCW and his final opponent, Janela, of being partly responsible for his passing.
Much of this backlash stemmed from Janela disclosing in an interview that the ECW legend needed to take kratom to get through the match and was knocked out at one point, yet GCW allowed the match to continue regardless. And now, during a new interview, this time with Fightful, the self-proclaimed bad boy has unloaded on those who have tried to involve him, going as far as to wish death upon them.
The fact that GCW let a 60-year-old man who needed to use kratom to get through such a dangerous match obviously made the indie promotion look awful in hindsight. However, trying to blame the company or any individual for Sabu’s death three weeks later, considering his well-documented addiction issues, always felt like a stretch. Still, hopefully, lessons were learned, and from now on, wrestlers’ safety will be put first.
