Jim Ross Explains What He Believes Fueled Vince McMahon’s Animosity Towards Him

It’s common knowledge among wrestling fans that Vince McMahon didn’t appreciate Jim Ross’ contributions to his company, to the point of even mocking his Bell’s Palsy at one time. And now, during a recent episode of his popular podcast, Ross addressed his former boss’s apparent animosity toward him, attributing it to jealousy. The current AEW commentator would explain that McMahon was not a natural play-by-play announcer like him, but noted that he would look at his “bank account and get happy,” suggesting the money he made was worth the abuse.

“I have never understood Vince’s intense animosity. I think he was jealous, he was never the play-by-play guy that I was, but he didn’t want to give me any credit for helping build the Attitude Era into what it was … As much grief as he gave me, I could always look at my bank account and get happy. So I never had the animosity toward Vince that he had toward me, and I never got it. I didn’t screw him around, I never no-showed, I didn’t phone anything in, I was doing two or three job. I never understood it. I worked my ass off, but sometimes that’s just the way that it is.”Jim Ross

73-year-old Ross joined WWE in 1993, debuting as a commentator at WrestleMania IX. From there, he became the iconic voice of the Attitude Era on Monday Night Raw, partnering with Jerry Lawler to call dozens of legendary matches. Additionally, he served as head of Talent Relations from 1997 to 2005, playing a key role in recruiting top stars like Trish Stratus, Edge, John Cena, and Brock Lesnar. Therefore, even though McMahon enjoyed bullying him on-screen, he was still inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2007.
