Last week WWE was honored by PR News for their work on managing corporate responsibility programs and social good initiatives. Stephanie McMahon, who is WWE’s chief brand officer, took to Twitter to share this news and received a scornful reply from Jake Hager. The former WWE World Heavyweight Champion and current AEW star clearly wasn’t impressed by WWE’s award and used Stephanie McMahon’s tweet as an opportunity to call WWE out on their business practices.
WWE controversially released many talents and furloughed staff earlier this year, with many never returning to work, despite the company making huge profits. While WWE does do great work supporting organizations like Make-A-Wish, Susan G. Komen, and Boys & Girls Clubs of America, some people have called into question their motivation after Stephanie McMahon tweeted a quote saying that “philanthropy is the future of marketing” back in 2015.
