California rockers Smash Mouth formed in 1994 and rose to fame on the back of hit singles like “Walkin’ on the Sun” and “All Star.” The band also recorded a highly successful cover of the Monkees’ “I’m a Believer” for the “Shrek” soundtrack in 2001.
Recent years for the band, however, have been a bit tumultuous as singer Steve Harwell left the band to deal with ongoing health issues. Now, TMZ has reported that Harwell is “experiencing the last chapter of his life … and his family is saying their goodbyes.”
According to a manger for Harwell, the Smash Mouth vocalist has been struggling with alcohol-related issues throughout his life and “he’s reached the final stage of liver failure … for which he’d, up until recently, been receiving treatment at a hospital.”
Harwell is apparently in hospice care at his home where his friends and family have gathered over recent days. And according to TMZ: “Steve’s manager says he likely has only a week or so to live.”
Harwell had a highly publicized incident during a show in October of 2021 where he appeared to be intoxicated. He allegedly threatened audience members and following the show, he announced his retirement.
“All Star” has nearly half a billion views on YouTube.
