Overnight, it has been reported by multiple media outlets in Mexico, including RÉCORD, that lucha libre icon Konnan, whose real name is Carlos Santiago Espada, is reportedly in a delicate condition after undergoing leg amputation surgery in a San Diego hospital. The belief is that the limb had to be removed due to chronic health complications from multiple health issues, which include having a kidney transplant back in 2007.
62-year-old Konnan debuted in 1988 and rose to stardom in CMLL as their first World Heavyweight Champion in 1991. From there, he helped launch AAA, became its top draw, and was even called the “Latino Hulk Hogan,” before finding fame in the United States with WCW, where he captured the United States Heavyweight Championship, and was part of the nWo Wolfpac. Post-WCW, he excelled as a wrestler, manager, and creative force in TNA, Lucha Underground, and, again, in AAA, where he currently works under WWE’s leadership.
