Earlier this month, comedy rock band Green Jellÿ fired their bass player Michael Snyder over an Ozzy Osbourne meme. The band’s social media accounts have often featured posts of the dark comedy variety, and this one in particular featured a photoshopped image of Ozzy holding a sign that read “One Day Sober.” The post was made shortly after the metal legend’s passing.
After some backlash online, the band’s frontman Bill Manspeaker deemed it a step too far despite initial texts with Snyder to the contrary. “Long story short…I allowed a green jello member control of my green jello page,” Manspeaker wrote. “He’s been doing a excellent job posting funny memes for years. Recently he posted an extremely rude video about Ozzy dying that I found highly offensive & I immediately took it down…the guy lost his mind & instantly started to demonize me on Facebook…”
Snyder would apologize for the post, but also revealed that the trouble didn’t start until Manspeaker posted an AI cartoon of Ozzy and Hulk Hogan which drew further criticism and was also later deleted. “Don’t quit. No big deal” wrote Manspeaker in an alleged text to Snyder, who offered to quit the group after the initial backlash to his meme post.
On this week’s episode of Raw from Birmingham, England, WWE Women’s Intercontinental Champion Becky Lynch criticized the city in a heel promo saying: “I’m not wrestling in Birmingham. The only good thing that came out of here died a month ago. But in fairness to Ozzy Osbourne, he had the good sense to move to LA, a proper city. Because if I lived in Birmingham, I’d die too.”
That prompted a response from Ozzy’s daughter, Kelly, who might not understand totally that Lynch is playing a character. “(Becky Lynch) you are a disrespectful dirtbag! Birmingham would not piss on you if you were on fire,” she wrote.
Having taken the brunt of criticism from several Ozzy fans in his own right, Snyder posted in support of Lynch via Facebook saying: “Apparently, Ozzy Zealots are a thing. Becky Lynch is a heel in WWE. It’s her job to bring heat into every city. People are losing their livelihood, watching their hard work being poured down the drain over jokes! She didn’t even insult Ozzy, she insulted Birmingham. This sh*t has gotten out of hand. As someone who has faced backlash for joking about the Ozzy-God, being fired from Green Jellÿ. I’m 100% team Becky Lynch.”
