A pioneer of electronic music and former No. 1 charting artist has fans worried following a recent show in England. Gary Numan, whose first two solo records topped the UK charts back in 1979 and 1980, broke down on stage during a concert at the O2 Academy in Birmingham. Numan’s song “Cars” was a worldwide smash hit, but he’s far from a one-hit wonder having achieved album sales in the tens of millions.
The 67-year-old Numan was midway through his set when he abruptly stopped in the middle of a song. He told the crowd that he had received the “worst news ever” earlier that day, and his wife rushed out on stage to comfort him. Numan said he would share the news with fans in a few days once he fully processed it.
One fan posted on X: “Rough to see him so upset during PPNM – not looking forward to hearing the reason in the coming days. Can’t be good. Absolute pro to battle on.”
Another added: “Gary Numan breaks down at O2 in Birmingham?? Hope he’s ok! He’s heard something today but said it’ll all come out in a few days.” Another said: “Hearing today that Gary was struggling in his Birmingham show, sending love.”
