Recently, Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder gave a wide-ranging interview to the New York Times where he said he “despised” Mötley Crüe and the ‘80s hard rock scene. Nikki Sixx responded calling Pearl Jam “one of the most boring bands in history,” and he also made fun of Vedder’s singing style. Pearl Jam then tweeted a video of one of their excited audiences that said, “We (love) our bored fans.” Now, Vedder has taken another jab at Mötley Crüe during a solo performance in Newark, N.J. Vedder’s new solo album, “Earthling,” comes out on Friday.
Prior to a solo from Earthlings and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith, Vedder said, “That drum kit — that silver, beautiful machine that he is the engine of — does not need to elevate or rotate to do its job. Let me just point that out.” Vedder was poking fun at Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee’s kit being lifted, suspended and rotated above the audience.
Vedder previously told the New York Times: “You know, I used to work in San Diego loading gear at a club,” Vedder said. “I’d end up being at shows that I wouldn’t have chosen to go to — bands that monopolized late-’80s MTV. The metal bands that — I’m trying to be nice — I despised. “Girls, Girls, Girls” and Mötley Crüe: F*ck you. I hated it. I hated how it made the fellas look. I hated how it made the women look. It felt so vacuous.”
Vedder’s new record, “Earthling,” was produced by Grammy Award-winning producer Andrew Watt, and it marks Vedder’s first solo effort since 2011’s “Ukulele Songs.” Nikki Sixx previously said that Motley Crue is on track to finally launch its long-awaited reunion on “The Stadium Tour” with Def Leppard, Poison and Joan Jett after the trek having been previously postponed twice.
