Last year, Disturbed frontman David Draiman revealed that he would not only like to cover a song by pop star Taylor Swift, he would love to collaborate with the singer/songwriter.
“I would love to cover a Taylor Swift song,” he said. “I think that she is one of the most prolific songwriters of our generation. I think she is insanely talented. I’d love to collaborate with Taylor if she ever wanted to, on any given day.”
Draiman again praised Swift, this time on stage after bringing two dads and their two 12-year-old daughters on stage. Draiman said to the girls: “So I take it that you came to the Disturbed concert, as opposed to the Taylor Swift concert, means that your parents are raising you on rock and roll.” But then he added: “Hey, don’t forget: Taylor Swift still kicks ass.”
Some in the crowd began to boo, but Draiman quickly cut them off.
“Don’t you boo her,” he said. “You know what? I will stand up and applaud any pop artist that gets up on stage and sings live and plays a guitar live in front of a whole group of f*cking thousands of girls and guys, young fans. Don’t talk sh*t about Taylor Swift. She is for real. And she’s making sure that an entire generation of new music fans understand what it means to actually play music live.”
Backing tracks or pre-recorded tracks have always been fairly prevalent in the pop music world, but the trend has seeped into rock and metal drawing the ire of many fans and musicians. The most vocal critic of the backing tracks trend is SiriusXM DJ Eddie Trunk who routinely states his disdain for them arguing that a live concert should indeed be performed live.
