To say that Van Halen singers David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar have had a tumultuous relationship over the years would be an understatement. Neither frontman have had much nice to say about one another, and they had a highly publicized ill-fated attempt to tour with one another some two decades ago.
Late last year, Sammy Hagar announced “The Best Of All Worlds” tour to celebrate the life and legacy of the late Eddie Van Halen. He told Howard Stern that David Lee Roth was welcome to join them on the road, but initially didn’t indicate that he only meant it as a one-off or guest spot invitation.
Hagar also told Sirius XM’s Eddie Trunk: “From the bottom of my heart, he would be so welcome,” in reference to Roth. He also told Howard Stern: “If Alex Van Halen wants to jump up, if David Lee Roth wants to come out and join us, come on, motherf*cker. You are welcome. This is about Van Halen.”
Roth seemingly accepted Hagar’s invitation as reported by the Van Halen News Desk. VHND.com reported: “We have it on very good authority that Roth never got a call from Hagar. In fact, no one from Hagar’s camp reached out to Roth’s camp to ask if he was interested in going on tour. Roth’s statement given to VHND, intended for Hagar is this: ‘I’m ready to go. Let’s do this.’”
Hagar clarified to a fan on Instagram that he wasn’t inviting Roth to do the entire tour. “He can come out and sing a song on a show or two if he can remember the words.”
He also added in another comment: “He’s not invited on the tour. NOOOO F—ing way. It was to sing a song with us somewhere like a lot of singers, guitarists, etc. are going to do on this tour. I know better than to have him on tour again. Been there done that.”
Now, David Lee Roth has responded in a YouTube video titled “The Ballad Of Popsicle Sam. Roth said that Hagar started spewing “diarrhea vitriol” in his direction after being “sex probed” by aliens.
“According to Sam, he was abducted by aliens,” Roth said. “I know when you’re abducted by aliens, you get sex probed,” Roth continued. “I am compelled to solicit this sordid subject in an effort to explain Sam Hagar’s conduct. For the last 10 summers, I haven’t said a single syllable about him. Not one. I defy you. And in the face of a constant fart gas aimed in our direction here at the Mojo Dojo Diamond Dave Laboratories. And I think we’ve arrived at both the technical and the medical answer that may explain some of Sammy Hagar’s conduct and his constant spew of diarrhea vitriol in our direction. Sammy Hagar was abducted by aliens and he was sex probed. Sex probed.”
Roth continued: “Does it require apparatus? Is it a beam? We don’t know. We may never know,” he said. “But what I do know with absolute accuracy is that if you take a half of a popsicle and you jam it into a cassette tape player, no matter how carefully you extract it, that tape player will never play the same again, no matter how carefully you try and fix those delicate little parts. And it’ll get worse and it’ll seem like the singer that you used to be will stop making sense whatsoever. A lot like Sam.”
Hagar wrote in his memoir that he had a vivid dream where he encountered aliens, and he later said that he believed the incident actually happened. Roth’s full video can be viewed below.
