Gilbert Gottfried, a veteran stand-up comedian, podcaster, “Aladdin” star and one of the most of the most fearless and unique voices in show business has passed away after a long illness. He was 67. “We are heartbroken to announce the passing of our beloved Gilbert Gottfried after a long illness. In addition to being the most iconic voice in comedy, Gilbert was a wonderful husband, brother, friend and father to his two young children. Although today is a sad day for all of us, please keep laughing as loud as possible in Gilbert’s honor,” his family wrote on Twitter.
Gottfried and Loudwire once trolled Slipknot fans saying he was the true identity of their masked percussionist Tortilla Man, and he has other brief connections to heavy metal. He geeked out with Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett on classic horror films for an episode of “Gilbert Gottfried’s Amazing Colossal Podcast.” A Cameo clip of Gottfried also went viral when he was hired to plug the new album from death metal band Portrayal of Guilt, and in 2010 he joined forces with Victory Records to combat illegal downloading.
Gottfried was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. in 1955 and began his stand-up comedy career at just 15. He starred in “Beverly Hills Cop II,” the “Problem Child” movies, “Look Who’s Talking Too,” “The Aristocrats” and also was featured for a season on “Saturday Night Live.” His appearances at the Comedy Central Roasts were legendary as he hilariously grilled Roseann, Joan Rivers, David Hasselhoff, Hugh Hefner, Bob Saget and more, and he appeared as a guest on many other various roasts.
Numerous actors, comedians and musicians reacted to the news of his passing. “@RealGilbert passed away” wrote Dee Snider. He was without a doubt one of the funniest human beings on earth. Sometimes listening to him on @howardstern show I would literally be crying I was laughing so hard. The world is a sadder place without him. RIP Gilbert.” Comedian Bill Burr tweeted: “Rest In Peace Gilbert Gottfried! First time I saw him live he did his Jackie Kennedy bit: “Jackie do you remember where you were…” in front of drunk Bruins fans at Nicks. #RIPGilbertGottfried
