In a stunning surprise at World Series Wrestling’s Rise Against event in Adelaide, Buddy Matthews made his long-awaited return by ambushing Donovan Dijak. The hooded attacker unleashed a vicious steel-chair shot followed by his signature stomp, leaving the crowd in disbelief. Once he unmasked, Matthews addressed fans directly and confirmed he remains medically uncleared. Still, he added he is expected to return in October, meaning fans must wait several more months before seeing him back inside an AEW ring.
37-year-old Matthews’ injury occurred on February 15, 2025, when he rolled his ankle during his entrance at AEW Grand Slam: Australia ahead of a match with Kazuchika Okada. He competed through the pain but was later diagnosed with a partial ligament tear and cartilage damage. After attempting to rehab without surgery, complications forced an operation in early August 2025. Persistent nerve issues and numbness have since stalled his progress, but it now seems that there is light at the end of the tunnel.
