Celebrities and the WWE tend to go hand-in-hand, but in a new “Dark Side of the Ring” outtake, wrestling icon Bret Hart admitted to allowing a drug-fueled, rock star imposter to come backstage at a WWE event. Hart said he met a man who introduced himself as Sammy Hagar shortly after the real Hagar got the frontman job in Van Halen.
“He was in front of me, right in front of my seat. He had a kind of rock ‘n’ roll-type of jacket on,” Hart recalled. “I started talking to him, and he goes, ‘So you guys are wrestlers, aren’t you?’ I’m like, ‘Yeah, we’re wrestlers.’ I said, ‘So what’s your deal?’ He said ‘I’m a rock ‘n’ roll singer. I’m Sammy Hagar.’ He had just joined Van Halen like a week or two before the big announcement.”
Hart continued: “Jim (Neidhart) kept going, ‘That’s not Sammy Hagar.’ Why wouldn’t it be Sammy Hagar? ‘That’s not Sammy Hagar.’”
Even Neidhart was convinced it was Hagar after the imposter snorted cocaine in the dressing room. “Adrian (Adonis) hands the dollar bill to Sammy Hagar. Sammy Hagar snorts this big line of cocaine. As soon as he snorted it, he looked at me and Jim, and all of a sudden, this little trickle of blood came down his nostril. I remember Jim looked at me and goes, ‘It is Sammy Hagar!’”
A player from the New York Yankees was also backstage, however, and he knew right away that it was an imposter. Hart continued: “A Yankees player goes, ‘I know Sammy Hagar. You’re not Sammy Hagar.’ Then he walked right out to the crowd.”
Apparently WWE management was furious with the imposter being backstage, and Hart threw the blame elsewhere. “I remember I didn’t say anything,” Hart admitted. “I said, ‘I don’t know. All I know is he came with Adrian.’”
