During this week’s episode of Raw, Gunther defeated Jey Uso to win his second World Heavyweight Championship. This caught many fans off guard as it was believed that Uso was going to have a much longer reign, given his popularity and ability to move merchandise. However, it has now been reported by Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that Triple H made this booking decision as he wants Gunther vs. Goldberg at next month’s Saturday Night’s Main Event in Atlanta, Georgia, to be for the belt.

“It was confirmed to us the reason this happened is because Paul Levesque made the call to make Gunther vs. Bill Goldberg on 7/12’s Saturday Night’s Main Event a title match, likely since it was going on the same day as All In Texas. Gunther vs. Goldberg was always going to be the retirement match and it was always going against All in Texas and on NBC, with the idea of maximizing that day with the big match not on Netflix but on free network TV.”Dave Meltzer

Seven months ago, Goldberg announced that the “victim” had been confirmed for his retirement match, which would take place sometime in 2025. Therefore, once WWE advertised a Saturday Night’s Main Event taping in Atlanta, most assumed this would be the former Atlanta Falcon’s in-ring swansong. Yet, with 58-year-old Goldberg now set to challenge for the World Heavyweight Championship, it seems conceivable there could be a title switch with WWE using the show to counter-program All In Texas.
