Athena Comments On Recent Accusations Of Taking Liberties With Opponents

Since joining AEW, Athena has developed a reputation for having A stiff in-ring style and actually faced a great deal of criticism following her match against Jody Threat on the October 12, 2022, edition of Dark. That was because she appeared to purposely look to hurt her opponent and took great pleasure in doing so. Subsequently, though, it would be confirmed it was all planned, and Threat was okay with how the match went down. And now, while speaking on a recent episode of Busted Open, Athena would address this, calling out the double standard with men allowed to work stiff while women are meant to look pretty.

The girls can hit just as hard as the guys. I have to sit there and see Jon Moxley and Jericho and Yuta, all of these guys hit the tar out of each other. I guarantee you, if I was a man, there wouldn’t be as much backlash or anything about that. It’s all these old bloated farts that want to sit there and tell us we need to look pretty.

They complain when it’s a dance, they complain when we hit hard. Get over it. We’re out here to be just as good as the guys. We give it our all and put in all this time and effort to hone our craft, and I feel we’re under-appreciated when we do things like that.

Athena had a six-year run in WWE as Ember Moon, which featured her holding the NXT Women’s Championship and NXT Women’s Tag Team Championship with Shotzi Blackheart. However, her release came on November 4, 2021, due to budgetary cuts. Yet, she would later reveal that management had asked the women in NXT 2.0 to dress more like Mandy Rose, which she was against, so this may have influenced the company’s decision. Nevertheless, considering her talent, it was always assumed she’d eventually sign with AEW, and on Saturday night’s Final Battle, she would win the ROH Women’s Championship in her home state of Texas.
