AC/DC lost their iconic frontman Bon Scott in 1980. The band would go on to recruit Brian Johnson as his successor, and the band’s next album, “Back In Black,” ended up becoming the biggest selling rock record of all time.

Over the years, there have been numerous rumors and reports of who auditioned for the band in addition to Johnson. A roadie named Steve “Burtie” Burton tried out and ultimately ended up fronting Starfighters, a band that included Stevie Young, the nephew of Angus and Malcolm Young who also serves as AC/DC’s current rhythm guitarist. Krokus frontman Marc Storace was also rumored to have been asked about his interest in the group, though he never officially auditioned.

In a new interview with The New York Times, punk rock icon Iggy Pop revealed that he was asked by a former AC/DC manager if he would be interested in auditioning following the passing of Scott.

Iggy Pop’s new album, “Every Loser,” was released last week, and the singer remembered palling around with Scott prior to his passing. “I had some very wonderful encounter with Bon somewhere, and we were both drunk and stoned,” he said.

“I see pictures sometimes. I go, I don’t remember, but that’s me with Bon!” he continued. “I loved what he did. They had a manager many years ago when I hadn’t re-formed the Stooges, I hadn’t moved to England, and this guy said, ‘Are you interested in joining AC/DC?’ They were looking for a singer.”

Iggy Pop said while he liked AC/DC’s music, he didn’t feel he would be a good fit, and ultimately declined to investigate any further.

“I listened to their record,” Iggy explained. “I thought, I can’t fill that bill. I wasn’t like, ugh, I don’t like them. It was quite well made. They do careful work. But I’m not what they needed.”

The first single from “Every Loser” is called “Frenzy” and features guest appearances by Guns N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith.
