The re-booted Pantera, consisting of surviving members Rex Brown and Phil Anselmo along with Zakk Wylde and Charlie Benante, have been a hit since taking to the live stage. Some fans were critical of the band continuing without late brothers Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul, but the majority of naysayers were drowned out by the positive response.
But could Pantera 2.0, which has been billed several times by its members as a celebration of the Pantera musical legacy, write and record new music? Sirius XM’s Eddie Trunk posed that question to Wylde on a recent episode of his “Trunk Nation” show. While Wylde isn’t dismissing the idea of doing new music, he wouldn’t be comfortable calling it Pantera.
“No. I think you would have to call it something else,” Wylde responded. “You know what I mean? Pantera is those four guys. So, yeah, you can’t replace that.”
Trunk followed asking if he would consider under a different name. “Yeah. If that was ever a bridge we crossed, we’d have to wait until we get there. But right now, it’s just the four of us celebrating what the fellas [from the classic lineup] created. I mean, how could you call it Pantera unless it was just pre-existing material and we were gonna record it — stuff that was in demo state or whatever, and it is songs that the guys wrote. But as far as new songs, it would have to be — you’d call it something else.”
