In sad news, author Scott Teal has confirmed that Frankie Cain, also known as The Great Mephisto, not to be confused with the CMLL luchador Mephisto, has passed away. The territory-era wrestler passed away on February 2, 2026, at the age of 93, and since then, old-school online fans have been paying tribute and sharing their favourite memories of his 22-year career.
Cain was a legendary wrestler from the 1960s to the 1980s, gaining fame as half of the Infernos tag team with Rocky Smith, and notably popularized the “loaded boot” gimmick. From there, he transitioned to singles as the heel Great Mephisto in the 1970s, winning titles such as the NWA Florida Southern Heavyweight from Hiro Matsuda. Additionally, he had a short run in Japan, where he teamed with The Sheik and shared the ring with The Funks and Giant Baba.
