Why WWE Scrapped Plans To Bring Back Melina

Three months ago, we reported that nine years after being told that creative had nothing for her, Melina was re-joining WWE. After this news broke, she took to social media to deny it, saying, “Im sorry you thought I was returning. If it does happen… well these sites ruined a great surprise. You should be upset that they cheated you of that moment if it happens.” This seemed like a weird thing to say if she wasn’t actually returning, and other wrestlers like John Morrison and Edge had used social media to deny their returns previously.

However, in this case, nothing more was heard, and it seemed that either Melina was telling the truth, or WWE had changed plans, something they are notorious for doing. Now though, reality TV star and former TNA name Jonny Fairplay has confirmed during a podcast with PWTorch.com that WWE intended to bring Melina back as part of The Robert Stone Brand on NXT. He says he found out when talking to Stone, who used the name Robbie E in TNA, that her having surgery caused the plan to be scrapped.

I hung out with Robbie E two weeks ago, and he has no idea what he’s going to do. His plan was to bring in Melina and manage in NXT. She had to have surgery or something. Jonny Fairplay

The Robert Stone Brand itself has not been used on NXT since October, with two (Mercedes Martinez and Chelsea Green) of the three wrestlers he was associated with having been called up to the main roster. This has left him with just Aliyah to manage, although Martinez’s availability isn’t fully known after not wanting to be part of Retribution on Raw.

Regarding Melina, it is regrettable she’s had to have surgery and missed out on her chance to return to WWE at this time. Hopefully, the procedure went well, and she’ll receive another opportunity in the future.
