Update On Vince McMahon’s Upcoming Netflix Docuseries Following Hush Money Revelations

In 2020, it was announced that Netflix had agreed to a deal with WWE for a docuseries on the life of head honcho Vince McMahon. The series was to be produced by Chris Smith, who directed Fyre: The Greatest Party That Never Happened, about the ill-fated Fyre Festival of 2017. Additionally on board was Bill Simmons, who is behind ESPN’s 30 For 30 series, the acclaimed André the Giant documentary for HBO, so it should have been excellent. Now though, following the Wall Street Journal’s reports on McMahon paying hush money to cover inappropriate behavior, Denise Salcedo has reported the series is no longer on Netflix’s programming spreadsheet.

It’s been speculated that McMahon returned to the ring at WrestleMania 36 against Pat McAfee because of the series, and his preparation and match would be a big part of the content. However, it appears the recorded footage will never see the light of day unless WWE agrees on a deal to purchase the footage themselves from Netflix. In many ways, the cancellation of the series is a significant loss to wrestling fans, as love him or hate him, there is no denying the fact that Vince McMahon is a fascinating individual who is behind the wrestling many fans grew up enjoying. Nevertheless, given Netflix’s issues regarding controversial content and their subscriber and stock prices declining, it is understandable why they wouldn’t want to be associated with McMahon going forward.
