Not long after he debuted for AEW, there was speculation that Malakai Black wasn’t happy and desired to return to WWE under Triple H’s creative leadership. Yet, while Black has played this down himself, the narrative on social media has remained he wants out of AEW. And now, after Will Ospreay encouraged Buddy Matthews to step out of the shadow of Black during Dynamite, Fightful Select has reported the 39-year-old is believed to have finished or be finishing up with AEW.
“Those that we spoke to in the company were of the belief that he was finishing up with AEW if he hadn’t already. They did not clarify if he’d be appearing on TV again.”
Fightful SelectJust a month after his WWE release, Black was able to sign with AEW due to an error in his non-compete agreement. Therefore, coming off WWE television, he was immediately presented as a big star and twice defeated Cody Rhodes in high-profile matches. Still, despite his initial push, he would slide down the pecking order in the following months and has since been mainly featured as a trios wrestler. Why he is booked like this remains unknown, but some suspect it’s because he wasn’t fully committed to AEW, with a return to WWE being his long-term ambition.
