On Sunday, Trey Miguel took to social media to say he would be taking a hiatus from professional wrestling, followed by a report that he had been released from AEW, just days after it was announced he’d signed with the company. And while no reason has yet been confirmed regarding this situation, Bryan Alvarez has discussed the shock departure on Wrestling Observer Radio, saying the decision originated “from up above,” seemingly implying a high-level corporate or executive directive rather than any issues involving AEW talent or Tony Khan.
Obviously, this revelation has already sparked speculation on social media, with many suggesting that Miguel’s offensive anti-gay comment back in 2020 could have led Warner Bros. executives to deem him unsuitable for television, as happened with Jay Briscoe. For those unaware of this incident, in a now-deleted Facebook exchange, Miguel responded to a troll by equating unattractiveness with being gay and claiming some pursue same-sex relationships due to a lack of options. Still following fan backlash, Miguel quickly apologized, stating that two of his best friends are gay.
