FTR has arguably been having one of the best years of any tag team in recent memory. Dax Harwood and Cash Wheeler are currently the Ring of Honor, AAA and IWGP tag team champions, and the pair has had classic matches this year with The Briscoes, The Young Bucks, Jeff Cobb and Great-O-Khan, Aussie Open and more.
The group has also had wrestling legends in their corner including Bret Hart, Ricky Steamboat and Mick Foley.
FTR, however, hasn’t been seen a great deal of late on All Elite Wrestling programming. The group were No. 1 contenders for the AEW tag team titles for many months before losing that distinction in a match with Keith Lee and Swerve Strickland while setting up a potential future match with the The Gunns.
The duo did team with The Acclaimed on the Nov. 9 edition of “Dynamite,” but they notably didn’t have a match on “Grand Slam” at Arthur Ashe Stadium and don’t have a match scheduled for this weekend’s “Full Gear.”
During a conference call promoting “Full Gear,” AEW president Tony Khan addressed FTR not having a match this weekend, and he said it’s mostly down to not having enough time to accommodate everyone on the roster. He also said he’s open to the possibility of having FTR featured across more promotions including Ring of Honor and New Japan.
“I would love, first of all, to showcase FTR as much as possible,” Khan said. “I have so many great wrestlers in this company, and it gives me a lot of thought about creating more content, not only under the AEW banner but also possibly under the Ring of Honor banner. Just looking at the AEW roster, FTR are one of the greatest teams in the world, and obviously that makes them one of the best teams on the AEW roster by default.”
“I would like to get many wrestlers, including FTR, involved more and create more content for AEW and Ring of Honor so we can showcase more (talent). I think we have frankly more than three hours worth of great wrestlers.”
“For FTR, I just think they’re two of the best wrestlers in the world, and I absolutely would love to showcase them. I think they are definitely in the mix (in AEW) and I think the world of them — for AEW and for Ring of Honor both. And I think it would be great for them to be lead representatives for AEW, Ring of Honor and for New Japan Pro Wrestling for that matter, so it’s great.”
Khan later pointed to FTR headlining the last Ring of Honor pay-per-view in a rematch with The Briscoes. He revealed that he tried to showcase that match on AEW, but presumably due to The Briscoes’ controversial tweets from years ago, it couldn’t happen. “Believe me, I tried,” Khan said.
Fightful Select previously stated past homophobic tweets by Jay Briscoe led to an influential person in WarnerMedia not allowing the duo to sign with AEW. Briscoe has apologized numerous times for the tweet.
