Tony Khan Reveals Why He Didn’t Turn MJF Babyface

MJF is one of wrestling’s top heels because he naturally comes across as arrogant and aloof. However, with that comes a challenge as fans often want to cheer the best heels as they become cool, thus making them babyfaces. And now, while speaking to the LA Times, Tony Khan has revealed he considered doing this with MJF once he started to get cheers but ultimately decided to stay the course with him as a heel because “AEW is at its strongest when MJF is at his worst as a villain.

I listen to the fans, when the reactions were so massive, I had to at least think about [making MJF a good guy], but MJF is the world’s best young pro wrestler and one of the best pro wrestling heels of any age I’ve ever seen and I think his ability to antagonize the other wrestlers and the crowd is unparalleled. AEW is at its strongest when MJF is at his worst as a villain.

Thankfully for AEW, they already have several strong babyfaces with the likes of Adam Page, Jack Perry, Darby Allin, and a returning Adam Cole. Additionally, CM Punk remains sidelined but has the potential to be a foil to MJF, having previously had a feud-of-the-year contender run with him. Now though, with MJF as champion, the dynamic will have changed entirely, and Punk will be the one chasing the title he never lost.
