Thunder Rosa defeated Britt Baker on last week’s Dynamite in a brutal and bloody cage match which was likely here career highlight. She would also have a memorable entrance with a Mariachi band playing her to the ring, and during a recent interview on NBC Sports Boston’s Ten Count, she would discuss this, saying she did this to honor and respect her culture. However, she would bring up being bothered by a WWE segment from 2004 which featured Brock Lesnar using a Mariachi band to mock Eddie Guerrero.
I can tell you, I read about me bringing the Mariachi, and I remember Brock Lesnar making fun of Eddie Guerrero with that. And that hurts because they were making fun of my culture before. And on Wednesday, I represented our culture properly, with honor and with respect. Because people were, “oh, Mariachi, fun. Like, let’s make fun of Mexicans.”
Lesnar was highly praised at the time by fans following the famous segment as it was the most personality he’d shown since debuting. And while it is problematic, especially by today’s standards, WWE likely felt it was OK as Guerrero would end up victorious. Nevertheless, it is now great that a Mariachi band has been used positively on an American wrestling show thanks to Rosa and AEW.
