The Undertaker Comments On Having To Wrestle The Same Night Owen Hart Died

Over the years, The Undertaker and Steve Austin had many memorable matches; however, their 23-minute bout at Over The Edge in 1999 is an easy one to overlook. This is because earlier in the evening, Owen Hart tragically fell to his death prior to his Intercontinental Championship match against The Godfather when his harness line malfunctioned ahead of his entrance from the rafters. And now, during a Q&A session on his Patreon, The Undertaker has discussed having to go on after such an awful incident and revealed he feels the show should have been stopped.

“Although we’d already been told, it was kind of like you still didn’t believe it. When we came back, we were hoping that something miraculous had happened, and it wasn’t true. It was such a tough night. Hindsight being 20-20 [we should have stopped the show], but you also have an arena full of people, too. I don’t envy or didn’t envy Vince McMahon having to make that decision. It was a tough call in the heat of it. I just know it was extremely difficult to go out and do my job that night. ”

Vince McMahon was heavily criticized at the time for continuing the pay-per-view following the terrible accident, and subsequently, no replay was shown. Additionally, the event was never released on VHS or DVD, although an edited version eventually became available via the WWE Network. However, it seems doubtful many fans have ever gone back to watch such a depressing show that features heartbroken wrestlers simply going through the motions.
