The Sandman began wrestling in 1989 and achieved far more success than anyone who witnessed his first few matches ever predicted. And now it has been announced that he will be wrestling in his retirement match at Joey Janela’s Spring Break X in Las Vegas on April 17. As of writing, his opponent remains unannounced, although as Janela himself wrestled Sabu in his retirement match at the Sma Event a year earlier, many are predicting he will take the coveted spot as the ECW’s final opponent.
62-year-old Sandman, real name James Fullington, rose to fame in ECW, evolving from a surfer gimmick into a beer-drinking, kendo stick-wielding brawler who captured their World Heavyweight Championship a record five times. Known for his hardcore matches and unique charisma, he also competed in WCW, TNA, and WWE, getting over regardless of booking, thanks to his ability to connect with audiences. Therefore, while his final match likely won’t be a classic in-ring performance, it will almost certainly draw a large crowd for GCW, a promotion some consider a spiritual successor to ECW.
