Ted DiBiase Jr. Wants Mistrial Due To Medical Emergency

According to PWInsider.com, Ted DiBiase Jr. has filed for a mistrial in his criminal case in the U.S. District Court, Southern District of Mississippi, after his lead attorney, Jason Scott Gilbert, suffered a sudden medical emergency during the trial. Gilbert fell ill mid-cross-examination of a key government witness, disrupting the defense strategy he had worked on solely since April 2020. As the case involves millions of documents and numerous witnesses, DiBiase feels that having alternative counsel would violate his Sixth Amendment right to chosen counsel.

For those unaware, former WWE wrestler Ted DiBiase Jr. was indicted in April 2023 on 13 federal charges in the Mississippi welfare scandal, one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and theft of federal funds, six wire fraud counts, one theft count, and five money laundering counts. Prosecutors allege he conspired with others to divert $3.9 million in funds to his companies for fake anti-poverty and drug prevention programs, using the money for personal luxuries like a home, boat, and vehicles. However, it should be noted that he has pleaded not guilty and believes that, under his initial lawyer, he would have been found innocent.
