Sum 41 singer Deryck Whibley has a new book out, “Walking Disaster: My Life Through Heaven And Hell,” and excerpts from it have been generating plenty of press. Whibley talked about a brief drug-fueled fling he had with socialite Paris Hilton. He also, however, claims that he was sexually abused by a former manager when he was only 18 years old.
Whibley said that his ex-manager Greig Nori first “passionatley” kissed him at a party after asking him to “come to the bathroom to drop another hit of ecstasy,” which left the singer “stunned.” Nori allegedly told Whibley that he had “never experienced same-sex attraction before, but (Whibley) brought it out in him because what they had was so special.”
“He was so relentless and convincing that after a while, I started to believe that maybe he was right,” Whibley wrote.
Whibley went on to say after the relationship became physical, Nori kept trying to convince him he was bisexual. Whibley claims Nori called him “homophobic” and that he “owed him” for his music career. “He told me this was all my fault to begin with because I should never have said yes to it in the first place. I started this and now he was in it with me so I couldn’t just stop,” Whibley wrote.
Whibley said that Nori previously bought an underage Whibley and his bandmate shots, and that they used to talk on the phone for hours. Whibley also said Nori tried to keep Sum 41 from contacting their own parents. “He tried to keep them away all the time. Now it makes more sense. Because he was the same age as our parents, and we didn’t know that at the time. He knew they would get suspicious of the way things were running. … He would always be like, ‘You can’t have a relationship with your parents and be in a rock band. It’s not cool. It’s going to hurt your career.’”
Whibley said that Nori began abusing him verbally and psychologically once their sexual relationship ended. Whibley would go on to tell his now ex-wife, singer Avril Lavigne, about the relationship. She responded: “That’s abuse! He sexually abused you.”
Nori responded to the claims in the Toronto Star earlier this week: “The accusation that I initiated the relationship is false. I did not initiate it. Whibley initiated it, aggressively. ‘When the relationship began Whibley was an adult, as was I. The accusation that I pressured Whibley to continue the relationship is false. The accusation that I pressured Whibley to continue the relationship by accusing him of homophobia is false. Ultimately the relationship simply faded out. Consensually. Our business relationship continued.”
