Slayer made their return to the live stage recently at Chicago’s Riot Fest. The show marked the band’s first live performance since their farewell tour back in 2019. And while Slayer’s performance was widely praised, a fan unfortunately passed away at the festival just prior to the band’s performance.
There was speculation that the fan died as a result of injury sustained during Slayer’s performance, but Riot Fest Organizers insisted that was not the case.
“We are heartbroken to share that a festival attendee passed away yesterday,” read a statement from the Riot Fest Instagram account. “Our deepest condolences go out to his family, friends, and loved ones during this incredibly challenging time.”
“The health, safety, and well-being of our fans and community have always been our top priority. We are aware of the various speculations surrounding this tragedy, including claims that it may be linked to the Slayer crowd. However, we want to clarify that this is not the case. The on-site medical team responded to this medical incident, near the Ferris Wheel area, prior to Slayer’s performance. Out of respect for the family’s privacy, we will not be sharing further details. We ask our community to come together, support one another, and keep those affected in their thoughts.”
The 58-year-old fan who passed away as a result of a brain bleed was Stephen Shult. He had reportedly been brought in to the hospital with head trauma. His daughter reported after the show that he seemed to be recovering before his condition took a turn for the worse, and the initial cause of his injuries has not been reported.
