Over the weekend, Roman Reigns’ WWE future was called into question when he told the crowd in New Jersey that he wasn’t sure he’d be returning to the venue again as he was entering a new phase of his life. Given that WWE’s Nick Khan has previously stated WWE has a plan for him to crossover into movies, it seemed this was what he was referring to, and he was perhaps going to depart the company.
Now though, Dave Meltzer has reported on Wrestling Observer Radio that Reigns has actually signed a new contract with WWE, effectively making him a part-timer like Brock Lesnar. Therefore it appears he won’t be doing many more house shows like the one in New Jersey from now on.
With house shows being one of WWE’s least profitable revenue streams, it is doubtful that having Reigns miss those shows will be a big issue. However, suppose he begins to miss television tapings and pay-per-view events as Lesnar does. In that case, it will likely have a detrimental effect. Nevertheless, with the company building around Reigns so heavily over the past few years, it could now force them to create new full-time stars for the future, with Cody Rhodes, Bron Breakker, and Omos seemingly being the most likely to benefit.
