The longest-ever reign of Queen Elizabeth II, the only monarch most of her subjects have ever known, is over. Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor passed away Thursday at Balmoral Castle, her estate in Scotland. She was 96. The palace issued a black-bordered statement: “The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”

Buckingham Palace released a statement from His Majesty The King: “The death of my beloved Mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family,” King Charles said. “We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished Sovereign and a much-loved Mother. I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the Realms, and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world. During this period of mourning and change, my family and I will be comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which The Queen was so widely held.”

Numerous rockers reacted to the news. “For my whole life Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II has always been there,” wrote Rolling Stones legend Mick Jagger. “In my childhood I can recall watching her wedding highlights on TV. I remember her as a beautiful young lady, to the much beloved grandmother of the nation. My deepest sympathies are with the Royal family.”

Ozzy Osbourne wrote: “I mourn with my country the passing of our greatest Queen.  With a heavy heart I say it is devastating the thought of England without Queen Elizabeth II.” Black Sabbath bassist Geezer Butler added: “Sad to hear of The Queen passing. I remember the street celebrations when she was crowned Queen. Always a staple of growing up in England. GSTQ- RIP.”

“Dignity,” wrote Def Leppard’s Joe Elliott. “If there’s ever one word to describe this wonderful lady & monarch it’s dignity. We will never see the likes of this again. She has transcended eras with good grace and service to her country that is unparalleled anywhere or by anyone. Thank you your Majesty for a lifetime of great memories and leadership.”

FOZZY frontman Chris Jericho also posted: “It’s always strangely sad when somebody famous that you literally knew of your whole life passes away, but #queenelizabeth’s passing hits even closer to home. Growing up in #Winnipeg in the 80s and because #Canada is part of the Commonwealth, we had to sing #GodSaveTheQueen every day at the end of the last period before we could leave school. What was probably a 2 min song seemed like #2112 because all I wanted to do was get out of there! I was quite annoyed with the old Queen on those days. But I also looked at the Queen every day on our money and saw her at every concert and @nhljets game, which was always a cool thing! Anyways thanks for showing true grace and character as a monarch and ruling the #Commonwealth with a fair hand!”
