A Grammy Salute to Cyndi Lauper first aired on CBS last month and has recently been added to Paramount Plus. Lauper recently was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and the pop icon’s Grammy salute featured guests including Cher, John Legend, Joni Mitchell, SZA and more.
Lauper has a history in professional wrestling as she featured for the then-WWF in the ‘80s with the “Rock ’n’ Wrestling Connection.” She feuded with legendary manager Captain Lou Albano, who also appeared in her iconic “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” video. Lauper also briefly managed Wendi Richter who defeated Moohlah for the WWF Women’s Championship in match televised by MTV.
During her Grammy salute show, Lauper shouted out Albano along with other wrestling legends. “I also want to thank the wrestlers,” Lauper said from the stage. “I was a wrestling manager. So I know a few moves, so don’t try me. But I want to thank Captain Lou Albano, Rowdy Roddy Piper, Freddie Blassie, all the wrestlers that made it so much fun. For all the people that used to say to me, ‘Oh, what are you doing with all those wrestlers? What the heck?’ I was having fun, and they were making my life so much fun.”
Surprisingly, Lauper has not yet been inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame, but that honor almost certainly has to be coming soon. Watch Lauper’s thank you speech for “the wrestlers” below.
