Last month, Las Vegas governor Joe Lombardo said he hoped that AC/DC would perform at the 2024 Super Bowl in his home state of Nevada.

Lombardo was asked who he would like to see play, and without hesitation the governor said “AC/DC!,” enthusiastically. “I was going to yell it out … But yeah, I’m serious. Bring ’em back.”

In recent memory, the Super Bowl halftime show has rarely featured rock performers. The Who did the football spectacle in 2010, and Aerosmith performed in 2001, albeit alongside N’Sync, Britney Spears and other pop acts.

Red Hot Chili Peppers, Lenny Kravitz, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty and The Rolling Stones have also appeared on past halftime shows, but more recent performers — Rihanna, Eminem, The Weeknd, Shakira, Maroon 5, Justin Timberlake, Lady Gaga, and Beyonce highlight the sort of acts that are now often pegged to do the show.

So in very unsurprising news, the NFL has elected again to ignore the rock genre for the halftime spectacle. Apple Music and the NFL announced on Sunday that R&B singer Usher will headline the proceedings.

“It’s an honor of a lifetime to finally check a Super Bowl performance off my bucket list. I can’t wait to bring the world a show unlike anything else they’ve seen from me before,” Usher said via Variety“Thank you to the fans and everyone who made this opportunity happen. I’ll see you real soon.”

It was rumored that boyband legends NSYNC would be selected to perform. Those reports were fueled by their reunion at the recent MTV Video Music Awards, but unless they make a cameo appearance as part of the show, that doesn’t appear to be the case.

In recent years, Twisted Sister’s Dee Snider has been very vocal about AC/DC or Metallica being chosen to perform given the fact that their music is often played at NFL games.

“Hey @NFL! Your go-to songs at EVERY game are metal: Enter Sandman, Cum On Feel the Noise, Thunderstruck, Crazy Train, We’re Not Gonna Take It, We Are the Champions, Final Countdown, I Wanna Rock, We Will Rock You, Welcome to Jungle. NONE of those bands have EVER played half-time show!” Snider wrote in 2019.
