Last week, Rob Zombie revealed the first official poster for his upcoming re-boot of “The Munsters” with the caption: “Check it out ! The official one-sheet poster for THE MUNSTERS has arrived! So ghoulie groovy good!” Zombie also revealed that filming had officially wrapped in Budapest. “Well, that’s a wrap on everyone involved with THE MUNSTERS! Thanks Budapest you’ve been great. Enjoy your new Mockingbird Lane. Next stop the airport.”

Written and directed by Zombie, “The Munsters” stars Zombie’s wife Sheri Moon Zombie as Lily Munster as well as Jeff Daniel Phillips as Herman Munster, Daniel Roebuck as The Count and Sylvester McCoy as Igor. Zombie released a teaser trailer last month giving fans a first look the film, and on Wednesday that was followed by the first official trailer. “The Munsters” will be released in September by Universal 1440 Entertainment, a production arm of Universal Filmed Entertainment Group.

Following numerous updates via Instagram including a detailed look at Herman Munster and various cast updates, Zombie talked to Entertainment Weekly about the movie and the decision to produce the film in color as opposed to the black and white look of the original ’60s series.

“I knew that if I went in and demanded ‘This movie’s going to be in black and white or forget it!’ we would not be talking about the Munsters right now, because it would have never happened,” Zombie said. “I guaran-f—ing-tee it. But what I did do is I made the colors sort of hyper-real. I noticed when the actors were in their makeup and they were just walking around, getting lunch or whatever, they looked like cartoon characters come to life. They were just so insanely colorful. I was like, I have to light the movie in the same fashion. It really seemed at all times like a live action cartoon, which was really exciting.”

Zombie also said the film will be more family friendly than his previous films. “Yeah, it’s 100 percent in the spirit of the show,” he said. “I didn’t want it to be different. I wanted to totally retain the vibe that it had in the ’60s.” The original show is also currently streaming on Peacock.

The original series was a ’60s television show based around a family of monsters in the style of a sitcom. It ran on CBS from September 24, 1964 to May 12, 1966, with 70 episodes produced. Its cancelation came when “Batman” starring Adam West, went head to head with the show causing ratings to decline significantly. Following a failed attempt to revive the show with original cast members in 1981, a further renewal came to fruition in the form of “The Munsters Today,” which ran from 1988 to 1991 with 73 episodes.
