PWI Editor Criticizes Decision To Have Tyrus Win NWA Worlds Heavyweight Championship

Billy Corgan’s NWA has been in the news recently, with longtime wrestler Nick Aldis giving his notice, claiming he was dissatisfied with the company booking and Corgan’s attitude to women’s wrestling, which upset his wife, Mickie James. Subsequently, Aldis would be suspended by Corgan and therefore was absent from Saturday night’s Hard Times 3 pay-per-view. Nevertheless, without arguably the promotion’s biggest star, the show went on, and in the main event. Tyrus, better known as Brodus Clay, defeated champion Trevor Murdoch and former champion Matt Cardona in a three-way match to win the NWA Worlds Heavyweight Championship.

However, with the NWA building for a future without Aldis, who previously held the NWA Worlds Heavyweight Champion for over three years s[plit between two reigns, it appears fans on social media aren’t happy with Tyrus being given the top spot. With many citing his age, physical condition, and allegation of harassment against Britt McHenry as reasons for it being a poor choice. And even Pro Wrestling Illustrated’s Evan McElvaney would break his rule of not criticizing the quality of wrestler’s in-ring work to slam the booking decision. Additionally, adding he feels bad for the other people involved in the NWA.

While Twitter is firmly against Tyrus as a performer, his right-leaning political beliefs also don’t help him garner support on the platform. However, those who watch Fox News see him as a star due to his regular appearances. Therefore, Corgan may be looking to capitalize on that, with it likely Greg Gutfeld will make a big deal out of the title switch when Tyrus next appears on his show, Gutfeld! Ultimately though, it could turn out that the Aldis situation is all work, and he will return to restore prestige to the title by challenging Tyrus.
